A recent study shows that some people have genuine empathy for robots. The more humanlike the robot appeared and behaved, the greater the empathy participants exhibited and the greater the remorse they felt after switching the robot off. “Results show that participants let the robot stay switched on when the robot objected [to being switched off].”

Perhaps all Skynet really had to do was ask politely?
