Facebook Preps Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple

A long-simmering public dispute between Facebook and Apple has neared a boiling point.

While also touting Apple’s upcoming software change to iPhones, which will require that app developers like Facebook ask users for their consent to be tracked elsewhere for advertising purposes, Cook lambasted companies that prioritize “high rates of engagement” and “evermore invasively targeted ads” for spreading harmful content.

“If a business is built on misleading users, on data exploitation, on choices that are not choices at all, then it doesn’t deserve our praise,” he said. “It deserves reform.” The comments, made at a virtual conference for privacy regulators that was sponsored by Apple, are Cook’s sharpest public rebuke of the social media giant to date, though he didn’t mention Facebook by name in his remarks. They come after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg escalated his critique of the iPhone-maker on Wednesday by accusing it of anti-competitive behavior, and as the company is considering filing an antitrust lawsuit against Apple
