I had a recent experience with a local financial services provider that escalated quickly into negative downward spiral, ultimately ending the business relationship. After reviewing the situation, I can see the emotional hijacking that took part on both sides. 

The 4 points in this article are useful reminders on dealing with emotionally charged discussions. I'll add a 5th, and that is to perform a cost-benefit analysis on "winning" in a disagreement and to consider walking away before even engaging if the perceived "win" isn't worth the cost.
