What Pornhub knows about your secret habits

Your secret favorite education site (no, not Youtube) which attracted 33.5 billion visits in 2018 just published its annual insights, to explain what really captivates our attention. For a start, apparently people still search for Kim Kardashian’s sex tape in 2018 which is Pornhub’s most watched video of all time at 195 million views, but Stormy Daniels was the top overall search in 2018. Also interesting is that ‘Fortnite’ video game and ‘Tinder’ were also top-20 searches on the site. I guess people fantasize about sex with a video game character they met on Tinder?

U.S. remains the king - The U.S. drove the highest daily traffic to Pornhub, followed by the UK, and India, rounding out the top 3 spots. Combined, the top 20 countries make up 80% of Pornhub’s daily traffic, with 91% of the site’s visit in the U.S. coming from mobile devices. The average time users spent on their Pornhub visit is 10 minutes and 13 seconds. Now in the U.S. the southern states spend the most average time with over 11 minutes, while Kansas spends the least time on Pornhub with an average of 9 minutes. Sundays are the most popular day for porn, while Friday generates the least traffic. Perhaps people are out on Friday putting into practice what they learned in their Fortnite-Tinder tutorials. According to the report, traffic increased by 5% on Black Friday and 7% on Valentine’s day, while it saw its biggest drop in visit on New Years Eve, a decrease of 34%.

Let’s talk about men versus women preferences. ‘Lesbian’ was the number one search among female visitors and ‘threesome’ was a top-5 search, while ‘Japanese’ was the number one search among men, replacing ‘MILF’ from 2017, and ‘step mom’ also made it to the top-5. In the U.S. women account for 28% of total site visits while men rack up 72% of visits. The average age of visitors in the U.S. is 38 y/o, however 52% of the U.S. visits are ages 18-34 y/o.

The takeaway - Porn sites own the best source of data about what people like to watch on the internet and what they would pay for, as it racks up more daily viewers than Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Hulu. The digital porn industry itself is a monopoly, mostly controlled by MindGeek, the company that owns Pornhub, and while it has your attention and data, it knows exactly what kinds of products and experiences to market to you.
