Ethereum’s Metropolis Hard Fork Will Activate at the End of September

Hardforks are never a sure thing with communities built on distributed consensus. However, Ethereum has a proven track record of successfully implementing protocol upgrades via hardforks, and Ethereum will need to continue to do so if it is going to scale to support the many services being built on top of it. This forthcoming hardfork, Metropolis, will take place in 2 parts and consist of many EIP (Ethereum Improvement Proposal) upgrades that help with scaling, transaction anonymity (see the zkSNARKs deep-dive below), and other improvements.
