Facebook Shutters Its Parse Developer Platform

Developers that built their mobile apps on Facebook's Parse service are up in arms as the company announced suddenly that they'll be shutting it down. Businesses should think long and hard about building business critical products on Facebook or any other company's proprietary BaaS - backend as a service. The upfront time you save using a product like Parse is overshadowed by the huge business risk of being subject to a 3rd party company's whims.

While building on public blockchains like the Bitcoin introduces a number of other complexities, it does eliminate the business risk of one company unilaterally turning off a service your product depends on.
