Martin Sorrell Wants to Build a New Ad Empire. Please Don’t Call It Revenge.

The summit phase of his epic climb started in 1985, when he quit his job at Saatchi & Saatchi, the London ad agency, where he had spent nine years as the resident acquisition maestro. He and a partner bought a controlling stake in Wire and Plastic Products, a publicly traded company that made wire shopping baskets. It was soon renamed WPP and became the shell company for a global buying binge.

I had no idea that's where the WPP name originated from. But, like Berkshire Hathaway, it's sort of perfect. Also sort of amazing how Sorrell negotiated so hard on even just this profile. This isn't exactly Mad Men, but it's what Mad Men would go on to become (WPP also ended up buying many of the firms referenced in that show, of course.)
