Ontario’s Labour Relations Board ruled that Foodora couriers are dependent contractors of the food delivery platform, allowing for unionization. They were found to be more similar to employees than independent contractors.
As a result of Foodora’s courier selection process and their ability to set terms, conditions, and standards, in practice the couriers work for Foodora, not themselves. This ruling is the first in Canada on the status of the growing category of ‘gig workers’.
