It is estimated that between 5000 and 18,000 registered and unregistered artisanal fishers operate in Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay. Fishers have borne the economic cost of its environmental degradation more than any other group. But while the fish are vanishing, the number of fishers continues to grow thanks to a faltering economy still recovering from a crippling recession.
Andrew Christian Johnson is a Canadian freelance documentary photographer and videographer. His most recent work explores the dynamic between political polarization and social inequality with people fighting for their voices to be heard or to silence those of others.
