Cats have all of a sudden taken over the Ethereum community. CryptoKitties, a project incubated by Canada-based Axiom Zen, was conceived as a fun and engaging way to showcase how Ethereum can be used to hold and trade unique (non-fungible) assets using the EIP-721 token standard. This game instantly shot to unexpected popularity, so much so that the Ethereum network has become clogged with transactions and $ millions has been spent on these unique virtual cats alone. Although some decry this activity as an annoyance, I think it's a great way to demonstrate the potential for the technology while reminding the community that scaling has a long way to go.
