Why did Apple let a few YouTubers scoop the first iPhone X reviews?

The first iPhone went to four reviewers -- all of national media organisations -- for review, before it was released to the public. The iPhone X went to technical illiterates by comparison, enraging a few (especially John Gruber of DaringFireball fame). Instead of getting down in the depths of the pixels, the reviewers were more focused on waxing lyrical on how great the phone looks. Though I like how you don't have to write for a newspaper to get invited to Apple events anymore, why a tech-focused YouTuber like Marques Brownlee didn't get an invite is beyond me.
