Ever since Spotify execs first uttered the term "self-driving music" in their first investor presentation, I've been scratching my head about where Spotify and Uber intersect when it comes to corporate strategy. This phenomenal, critical article by Liz Pelly dives into the darker side of the story: namely, in modeling itself on Uber, Spotify may actually be stripping its artists of true independence instead of nurturing a more organic and sustainable support system for them. Also, Liz is now writing a regular column with The Baffler dedicated to the platform economy's impact on the music industry and on artists' livelihoods and careers, so expect to see more of her pieces here. :)
