Grab gets $2B from Didi and SoftBank to fuel bid to defeat Uber in Southeast Asia

The round could extend to $2.5 billion with input from other investors, one of whom could well be Alibaba. The plan is to kick Uber out of Southeast Asia as Didi did to it in China. A number of media have written about the possibility of this happening, but frankly I think Uber still has a good business in this part of the world, while the market itself is forecast to grow multiples of the next decade so it's still all to play for. Uber seems more likely to withdraw if it has more important priorities to contend with, but even that doesn't seem particularly likely when you consider that Africa, Latin America and other markets are more nascent for ride-hailing.
