I'm old enough to have delivered presentations with overhead projectors and transparencies. Back then, I created the slides with the SliTeX package for the TeX formatting language.

Wunderpresentation is a modern take on this. It lets you create and run presentation slides from structured text combining the content with design directives. The tool takes care of arranging and laying out the slides from the specification. Wunderpresentation supports also Markdown and provides an API. If you're a developer, you can generate the presentation source from code.
