America's midlife crisis: lessons from a survivalist summit

I'm heading to a prepper conference next weekend, admittedly more out of curiosity than anything else, so I enjoyed this article probably more than I should have. The author makes the point that we're in a really uncomfortable time in America's history, a time where things look great on the surface (the Dow at all time highs, low unemployment, easy access to services) yet many of us are preparing for some kind of catastrophe that we think is right around the corner. Having endured Hurricane Katrina and its immediate aftermath, I've seen firsthand what it looks like when the lid comes unscrewed, and it ain't pretty.
