Can AI Make Airports and Grocery Stores Easier to Negotiate?

The incoming head of JP Morgan’s AI research division, Manuela Veloso, wonders why robots aren’t yet following us everywhere carrying our goods like an omnipresent valet. Side note: My husband wonders this every time we go camping and have to hike in with our 30-lb packs. The key to making robots autonomous, Veloso says, is to enable them to ask us for help when they need it. Call me superficial, but the likelihood of my helping a robot is probably a function of how cute or creepy the robot is in making its requests.
