Malaysia's fake news law comes into force

My girlfriend is Malaysian, and as such I've taken the 14 hour flight several times in the last four years. Every time I get there I hear ads on the radio talking about identifying fake news and stopping its share in what analysts typically call the 'dark social' of chat apps. Now the country has a fake news law, that makes publishing fake news punishable by $100,000 fines and 6 years in jail, and has such a wide remit it seems obviously intended to prevent government scrutiny, especially in election season.
