Google's utopia: Sidewalk Toronto

Google is helping Toronto reimagine a derelict waterfront, leveraging smart technology in a sensor-enabled hyper-wired metropolis that, in theory, could go a long way toward running itself. The project, called Sidewalk Toronto, would build the community “from the internet up,” as the marketing team says — while raising questions about who would have access to the data flow to optimize the city’s services such as traffic flow and self-driving cars, and “pay as you throw” garbage chutes that culls the recyclables from the garbage. Would the data miners be able to tell when I’m stressed by how many empty cartons of Cherry Garcia I might send down the chute in any given week?
