What Makes a Thriving and Interesting City? Something Called Collision Density


The whole bit about expected-collisions-per-square-foot aside, this is something cities need to get their heads around. The leaders are well down the road of investing in urban nodes, but many communities still lack a central place for mingling and mixing. 

Done well, collision density should appear in multiple spaces and at multiple scales. Outdoor public space, complete streets, coworking spaces, coffee shops--each of these (and more!) lend themselves to serendipitous collision.
