This long read reflects rather well my own dualistic relationship with self-help. Most of it feels like neoliberal optimization of the human resource. But also, most of it is rooted in actual scientific insight that can be pretty helpful. I guess, it comes down to being critical and careful not to fall for the cultish parts of “self-improvement.” I already have The Happiness Industry on my stack. Time to cue it up.
