Airbnb removes nearly 50,000 rentals to comply with new law

The company said it was caught by surprise by a June 1 announcement that is “contrary to the guidance” the company said it was given by the Japanese Tourism Agency. “Much to our disappointment, after a number of discussions, including a meeting today, the JTA was unwilling to return to their original position or to make reasonable compromises to protect travelers visiting Japan,” Airbnb said in a statement.
