TikTok removed from Android and iOS app stores

Google and Apple took action following an order from the government which acted on a ruling from a court in Tamil Nadu state which claimed the service includes pornography. The order doesn't affect TikTok's 120M existing users, and the app could still be sideloaded on Android, but it is clearly a huge blow for the company, which sees India as a high priority market. Interestingly, parent company ByteDance changed its statement to media three times -- adding more friendlier wording each time and dropped mentions of the work it said it has done to police its content.

Things to watch here: will the order be reversed quickly or will the regulatory sentiment spread to other markets?

TikTok was briefly banned in Indonesia last summer for similar reasons. ByteDance will hope for a similar outcome.
