China’s Crackdown on Ed Tech May Have Little Effect on U.S.

China’s government has announced broad new restrictions on private tutoring. The new laws prohibit tutoring in core subjects outside of school hours, as well as banning tutoring companies from maintaining for-profit status and from receiving foreign investment. The stated purpose of the laws is to relieve financial and academic pressure on families. While the ramifications within China will be considerable, there is likely to be little effect on US edtech companies due to a lack of interaction between the edtech markets in the US and China and the scarcity of truly international edtech providers.
