Future Library

An amazing project I would have loved to have create myself. An artist has planted one thousand trees just outside Oslo, which will supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in one hundred years time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the writings held in trust, unpublished, until the year 2114. Writers to date include Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Karl Ove Knausgård, and Ocean Vuong. The website is gorgeous. I wonder how they will look at our day and age in 2114, when someone opens the book and reads the first page.

If you want to experience the feeling, visit this site which has digitized most of the 2,600 letters from a locked box from the 17th century. The trunk belonged to a postmaster and post mistress, Simon and Marie de Brienne. They hoped to ask money for the letters when someone retrieved them, hence calling this the piggy bank (spaarpotje). The trunk freezes a moment in history.
