FOQS: Scaling a Distributed Priority Queue

The entire Facebook ecosystem is powered by thousands of distributed systems and microservices, many of which would benefit from running the workload asynchronously.

To get the most of the asynchronous computing, they needed to improve their Queueing System so they've introduced FOQS -

Facebook Ordered Queueing Service (FOQS) is a fully managed, horizontally scalable, multitenant, persistent distributed priority queue built on top of sharded MySQL that enables developers to decouple and scale microservices and distributed systems.

This is a must-read if you are working (or planning to) with distributed systems at scale.
