Dam, that’s clever! Robot learns to improv like nature’s most lovable rodent

There's an elegance to how nature solves some problems. Bees can build an intricate hive, and beavers can build a dam by following simple rules and responding to local conditions. It stands in contrast to most robotics techniques that want perfect information and a deterministic plan in search of an optimal solution. The work by this University of Buffalo group reminds us that sometimes embracing a little uncertainty and letting the robots work things out can be a viable alternative.
