PISA results can lead policymakers astray - The parable of Finland

The newest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, assessing the education system of 79 countries, reveals uneven progress in its quest to find the unicorn education system to follow. Indeed, while education spending per student in OCDE countries has increased, results in reading, maths and science skills have stagnated or deteriorated. On the other hand, countries like Singapore or China have seen robust improvements. A major issue raised by this year’s report is the lack of political consideration to evidence such as prioritizing teachers’ education.
