Podcasts appeared in the 2000s, went very quiet for a decade, and have become pretty hot again in the last couple of years. At one point neither Apple nor Google had more than one or two people even working on this, but Spotify has been pushing on a broad front for a while (better cost structure than music) and is now launching paid subscriptions, with a 0% fee. Apple will launch paid subscriptions as part of iOS14.5, with its standard model - 30% commission (15% after the first year but no allowance for churn) and Apple has full customer ownership. And Facebook has a whole suite of announcements across both podcasts and drop-in live chat (i.e. Clubhouse).
